Open (research) data, open science, open access, data management plans, data security, protection of privacy… Such are but a few of the many questions that Belgian social scientists are now faced with more than ever. The SODA project team sought to learn more about the needs and concerns of its target audience by sending a needs assessment survey to all Belgian universities.

What do you do with the data that you collected from individuals or companies? Are your data safely stored under good conditions? Are backup copies regularly created? Are your data being reused by colleagues? Is there a dedicated department that already perform those tasks in your institution? Those were some of the questions that were sent to Belgian researchers through an online questionnaire.

After three weeks the survey was concluded, having received more than 200 reactions! This turnout indicates how aware researchers are of the most recent developments in the world of science and of the new challenges presented to them.

The SODA team would like to thank everyone who took the time to fill in the questionnaire and to send in valuable suggestions.

The next step is the data analysis, which will help create a data archive that is tailor-made for the needs of Belgian social science researchers.
