On Thursday March 26th, 2009, the National Archives of Belgium (NAB) organize a study day on the theme of “Personal records from the Foreigner's Police”. In 1948 and 1965, the State Security has handed over about one million personal records to the National Archives that had been filed by the State Security between 1835 and 1912. This impressive number of records increased further during the second semester of 2008, when a third package of records, from the period of 1913 to 1943, had been transferred to the NAB. The National Archives thus currently preserve over 2 million personal records whereas another 4 million records stretching over 20 kilometres are still kept at the Foreigner's Office. On the occasion of this study day, two questions will be discussed The papers of the morning session will be centred on the importance of these dossiers for the collective memory (deportation of the Jew population, of gypsies, etc.) and the essential contribution of the dossiers to scientific research stricto sensu (history of migration and migrants) and to genealogical research. The afternoon session will grasp our attention on the difficult subject of sorting with one central question: “Should we destroy, sort or preserve the entirety of these personal records from the Foreigner's Police produced after 1950?”. On the occasion of this study day, the exhibition “Border case: The Foreigner's Administration in Belgium (1832-1952)” will also be inaugurated. > Consult here the complete programme (FR - NL) Information: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it Free but mandatory registration to the study day via This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it |
