Searching persons Genealogical sources contain millions of sets of information about people. Through the years, many individual researchers have systematically analysed the archive documents and have recorded names and dates. The State Archives represent a platform on which all analytical data will be available in a large database. The search engine Search persons wants to offer a centralised search instrument for all available analyses of archive documents (parish registers, civil status registers, notarial deeds, etc.). The central database will not only aid and ease the work of individual researchers, but it will also guarantee that the numerous works carried out by researchers over the years are valorised and preserved in a uniform manner for the future. If you possess analytical inventories in any structured digital form, and wish to provide them, we kindly invite you to send an e-mail to

, preferably with an excerpt of your data. The State Archives wish to actively take part in analysis projects. For this purpose, they provide a software so that the collection of data can be done in a uniform manner in the future. “Demogen” can be downloaded from the website of the State Archives. Furthermore, an online analysis project called “Demogen visu” has also seen the light of day for which anyone interested can sign in via the website of the State Archives. After the installation of a small software package, digitised documents can be loaded and edited. Demogen visu is a software in which the upper part displays the digitised document and the lower part is used to enter information to be attached to the document. A large number of aids facilitate the input of information: automatic conversion of dates from the French republican calendar to the Gregorian calendar, input of commune names by abbreviation, etc. There is no need for the user to be connected to the Internet during work, a connection is only necessary to download the software and re-load the database. Collaborators can chose between a large number of work packages from the different provinces and communes. |
