Opening hours and closure days Short history of the State Archives in Leuven The State Archives in Leuven (for the province of Flemish-Brabant) opened its doors to the public on December 3rd, 2001. There had been no formal decision to set up the repository. The first official instruction was the Ministerial Decree of December 17, 1999, regarding the rearrangement of the organization chart of the National Archives and the State Archives in the Provinces, more particularly Section 11: Flemish-Brabant. The creation of this archives repository results from the splitting of the former province of Brabant in 1995. The law of 5 Brumaire of the year V stipulates that in every capital city of a department – the predecessors of today’s provinces – one archives repository has to be established. The State Archives are housed on the ground floor of the Villerscollege. The building dates back to the years 1757-1764 and has been entirely renovated from 1991 to 2001 (see L. Van Buyten e.a., Het Villerscollege te Leuven, Geschiedenis, restauratie, bestemming, Brussel, NAB, 2002). |
